'Twas the twelfth eve of Christmas, when all through the place
The family was laughing and staying up late;
The stockings still hung by the chimney with dreams
Of their this night being fill'd near bursting at seams;

Tonight was the last for our holiday cheer,
And we knew old Befana would soon be here;
She rides on her broomstick with presents (the best)
From Rome up to Parma and down to the rest;

And now we could hear her on our roof up above
So we [prepared ourselves] to show her our love;
We brought out four glasses, our wine, and four cakes,
For we knew how much effort she ev'ry year makes;

She came out from chimney all cover'd in soot,
Not once even thinking that something's afoot;
All the stockings she fill'd just so diligently
With candies and toys (and we waited intently);

– And 'twas thence that we pounc'd arm'd with joy and treats
So we could have her sit down and make sure she eats!;
Though more than surpris'd, with a great grin said she, sì
And sat at the table with the rest of us three.
