So. I'm going on a trip. And I kinda need to decide if I should just bring my phone and use that as a book or if I should bring my dedicated tablet as well.

So!
I know that I won't be able to get it in time for my trip but now I'm considering investing in a dedicated eInk ereader.
I'm gonna try to pick up a matte screen protector for my tab a7 lite this week, see how that works in the sun. If it isn't ideal, I'll start looking at options when I return home.
As of right now I'm gonna try to compare the xiaomi InkPalm 5, hisense touch (looks great but im not a huge music buff and the price tag is 😖) or the boox poke 3 (which some nice peeps on reddit tested for B☆W and it works!)
- Bigger
- Better specs
- Has English language support out the box
- Definitely works with the apps I need it to
what's apk?
- OP
The android installer package file. Idk what it stands for
oh oh. I knew that from way back in the way back. that sucks though.
- OP
Yeah so frustratingly stuck with getting something that might not be splash proof. Pity because I could have gone to thr store to pick up a kobo
OPSo just based off of image comparisons I think the poke3 (is it poke or po-ke?) is probs around thr same size as my a7 lite which means it will fit comfortably in my regular bags but not my small ones and it also means when I inevitably fall asleep while reading it will probs wake me up when it smacks me in the face when I drop it
There also doesn't appear to be any water or splash proof android eInk readers??? In like any size category
OPNevermind just watched several videos on the poke 3 and if is significantly smaller than my Tab (more than likely bigger than my phone only bags but would likely fit in my slightly larger but still tiny purses). It's also available on best buy and I can get it before I leave... but it would be like 50 bucks more expensive than buying from Boox directly (albeit shipping from them is "3 to 15 working days" 😖)
So still in the running! Most of the Hisense devices are twice that amount. The Poke is about 20-ish bucks more expensive than the InkPalm but is
Which is making me lean towards it.
OPMe: *finds out the kobo libra 2 is waterproof*
Me: *gets excited*
Me: *finds out I can't get apk onto it*
Me: :(
Related in spirit, this post reminded me I have a very old iPad, and I wonder if I could get it to charge and like… run enough to run Calibre companion and iBooks. 🤔
\o/ it works
I sort of want to get away from iBooks. Is there another reading app you guys recommend?
- OP
Uhmm hmm I mostly use thr Google books app so idk if yhats available for you. I've heard good things about aldiko!
It does look like Google Play Books is available. I tried Marvin 3 once and didn’t like it for some reason but I don’t remember why. I guess it’s time to just start trying things.
- OP
Probably the best bet. Olay around and see what offers you the best reading experience!
I ended up here last night. It’s open source and really interesting. It comes with automatic access to Project Gutenburg and similar open source document projects world wide and had three books installed already (Dracula, Jane Eyr, and one other I have blanked on). I’ll probably be playing with it more tonight to get things imported into it.
- OP
Ooh let me know how it goes!
OPOoh good luck!

Update! I just ordered the poke.
My business partner was nice enough to let me ship to her. There's a chance it can come in after I get back home (it says 3 to 15 business days so) but at lwast if it comes at the ealief end of it I don't have to worry about it being exposed to the elements
OPAnother small update! The poke made it to my business partner and im heading back into town tonight... except she just left town. I do not want to break into her home again so I will wait for her to come back midweek to get it, along with the rest of my mail lol
OPUpdate again, i actually posted my first thoughts about it here!
I would choose large tablet! Save your eyes the strain of staring at a 3 inch phone screen!
My phone us actually about 6×3in and I have successfully read all of Omniscent Reader's Viewpoint on it so. It's big enough lol. It's only a little bit thinner than my light novels lol
If you’re going to be doing a bunch of reading them def a tablet, esp if its eink or something that handles glare better than phones do
Oh I wish it was an eInk, I'm still in the market with hopes that I can maybe snag one that runs android 😔 I have a Samsung Tab A7 which works nice but I'm still holding out for a new device
They’re not android but Kobo ereaders are genuinely really flexible in terms of what they accept if that’s what you’re looking for? Sometimes I even use the browser to download fanfic.
The problem is that I have a large library of books that's only accessible on an android or iOS app 🥲 I originally had a Kindle but because of Fire being a butt, it crashed the app every time I tried to load it which led me to getting a new tablet
Ah I understand 🥲 Some platforms have at least some way to get their stuff DeDRM’d through caliber but there are some that are really hard nuts to crack *cough* bookwalker *cough*
Yeaaaah that one exactly. And I oreger buying from BW because it's definitely cheaper than Kindle even though Kindle is easier
Okay so two votes for my actual tablet. Guess I'll figure out why the fuck it says it's full despite me literally only having copies of fanfics and books on it lol
Although now this conversation is making me wonder if I can order a likebook or xiaomi and have it get here in time for when I lwave...
(The answer is no it won't get here on time rip. Might order one when I get back though)
I'm sorry but every single time I look at the original post of this thread my brain immediately feeds me
"WE'RE GOING ON A TRIP, IN OUR FAVORITE ROCKETSHIP, FLYING THROUGH THE SKY, LITTLE EINSTEINS----"
I have never heard this song or watched the show before but it was so cute holy shit
I've only seen bits and pieces while channel flipping but damn if that opening bit isn't an earworm.
