The Bobo Feature Releases Thread

Rather than continuing to manually update our "new stuff" display, I've hereby elected to make a valiant attempt at using an actual thread for it. This will not only make life easier for me, but also allow people to comment and ask questions on the updates themselves.

You'll still see the latest update in the same place with the same format. I've considered porting the old updates to this thread, but decided it's not worth the time. If you want a timeline of really old update, the logs page will always be there to serve us.

»I haven't actually implemented it
»I'm just starting with making the thread
»and seeing if i can actually get it done
»if not, this thread will live in infamy forever I guess

This is an example of a release. Here our amazing webmaster will tell us all about upcoming features like:

  • I don't know
  • Thread collapsing one day, I'm sure
  • Can't wait to have Golden Eggplants
  • We'll soon restart the push on search/denylisting
»this will likely end up deleted later
»i could have done all this directly on my localhost but
»a) I thought about it too late
»b) where is the fun

Welcome to

The New BobaBoard Releases System

new year, new us! Thanks to incredible technological advancements that only costed our dear webmistresses a bunch of newly-grayed hair, new releases are now officially announced by a special thread update!

Not only this allows you all to comment on releases, but (if I played my cards right) it also means our special "subscriptions system" will automatically notify our Discord servers of updates!

This aside, have one last 2020 gift:

  • You can now use the "best effort embed" option to attempt embedding anything on the web. Let me know if you find websites that don't work, so I can update the code and make it better and better!
»it's time to try
»if this doesn't notify we'll have to try again next year
»but hopefully it at least updates the main page as it should

In the same fashion as January 1st's food is just the reheated leftovers of the night before, today's most important update is embed anything from anywhere (but this time for real). For the curious, a thread explaining How Things Got Fucked.

Other changes:

  • Improved general handling of embed errors, so When Things Get Fucked, they can recover better.
  • The title now changes when you navigate between pages.
  • Re-added the thread loading indicator. And now threads will reload correctly even if you exit one and immediately re-enter it.

Also, join our next event: the Most Iconic Seme/Uke Pageants. Nomination threads are open in !ships until sometime next week.

(And don't forget Treat Yourself Day on January 6th).

.....and we're back after our 15 minutes of downtime! Don't ask me what happened because I have no idea. Just know the solution was deleting node_modules and reinstalling from scratch, which is the webdev equivalent of "turning it off and on again".

This update is not really a feature update, but an announcement of sorts:

  • My personal situation (cn: sick pet) has unfortunately worsened, which knocked me out for a while. I will get back into things, but I'm doing so slowly and gently.
  • I'm planning to use this time to organize things so volunteers, especially tech ones, can take over tasks from me. We have a "tasks brain dump" meeting this Saturday. I plan to have it geared towards tech/features discussion, but anyone is invited to join (it's going to be in the Volunteers discord server).
  • On the same day Trump was banned from Twitter, we also had to ban our first user. I've published a postmortem explaining the timeline of events, the measures taken, and what can we learn (and build) from this. Feel free to comment on the thread itself if you have questions or observations, and I'm also always available via Discord or the feedback form for a private discussion.

The only tech update is that I removed our Christmas decorations and update our frontend queries library. If things are weird, let me know!
